Math Merchants

Both age groups will work separately, but in a connected way, on activities this week, and will come together on Market Day to share their work. Activities will be age-appropriate, fun and stimulating for each group in its own way.
How would you like to turn a classroom into a city? What will your job be? Will you run a bakery, a toy store, maybe a pet store? Create your goods and open your store to the public! Your city will have its own money, and as you sell your goods you can also shop around the other stores in the marketplace.
In this camp, children use art, crafts, and cooking skills to manufacture goods to sell. As buyers and sellers in the city they develop number skills and mathematical reasoning, using money in real life scenarios. They will calculate with money, budgeting and experiencing cash flow situations. These concepts will be approached at a level appropriate to the ages and skills of the children. Older campers learn how to create salaries, track daily sales, apply taxes, calculate discounts and make change. Campers create an inventive, imaginative math world.
