This week, Chris Swinko’s 3rd and 4th grade students received great news: after their presentation to City Council, the City of Ann Arbor will expand the backyard chicken ordinance to allow hens to be kept on school properties! This means that by next spring, a small flock of hens will join the school.

Petitioning the city for the change was a process of deep academic and civic learning— including hands-on research, building consensus with our neighbors, and crafting a persuasive case. Congratulations to Chris’ class!

Read more about the project on Chris’ blog and in the article on MLive.
