Eudaimonia
06/05/2010

Eudaimonia is a Greek word for happiness, used by Jefferson as the meaning of the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence. The meaning as he interpreted it is human flourishing, self-actualization, knowing who you are and what you believe and having the courage to live according to your beliefs. We call our event Eudaimonia, because this is the kind of happiness we encourage our children to pursue at Summers-Knoll.

The Eudaimonia event in the early summer brings together the launch of our annual children’s book (created by the staff and students of Summers-Knoll), a silent auction and raffle, and a delightful party with food, wine and celebration. We have traditionally used the warm and beautiful Ann Arbor Art Center as a venue for this event. Imagine a beautiful arty building, filled with interesting auction items and a really gorgeous book display, and wonderful people having the time of their lives: parents from our school, teachers, alumni parents, board members and members of the wider community.

Curious Epicures
10/10/2010

Our Curious Epicures event in the fall brings the work and joy of our children to the table – literally. The students study and explore a culture, including food, dance, art, poetry, music… As the curious epicures they are, they test recipes and develop a menu. With the expert guidance of Chef Alex Young from Zingerman’s Roadhouse, they cook a feast to share with our community. This is an inspiring event, full of luscious tastes and smells, gorgeous art work, song and laughter. It’s a family-friendly event, and is attended by our students, their families and friends, alumni, friends of the school, and special guests.
